To do a shamanic journey a person must be skilled to be able to enter “non-ordinary” states of reality at will. During this time a shaman’s “soul-parts” or “spirit” leaves the body to travel into the “other worlds”. IN this process, the shaman may journey to the “lower, middle, and upper worlds” to receive and obtain information to help themselves, a client, a family, or a community.

The shaman becomes “a cosmic traveler” at will. Each journey involves three phases: a prior period of preparation and purification, induction of an altered state of consciousness, and the actual journey.

There are many methods or techniques in learning how to “journey” that are taught and practiced by the indigenous peoples of the world, including westerners.

It is important to be mindful that skill, safety and trust are the cornerstones to the foundation in learning to journey. The more experienced your teacher, the richer your personal journeying experience will be.
